FIRE CISTERNS are reliable year round
water sources for fire fighting, often required
when there is no central piped water supply in the area. Providing such a
fire cistern in compliance with the local fire department’s design and
storage volume requirement may reduce insurance premiums and create a
valuable emergency water resource available to the entire community.
There are many different
capacities, sizes and layouts available. ACI’s standard tank measures 7’
wide by 6’ tall inside dimensions, length varies. This standard tank is
manufactured, delivered, set and assembled all by the ACI crew. Tank can be
supplied as a single tank or two tanks in series. For large capacities the
tank to measure 10’ wide by 8’ tall. The weight of these sections require a
crane for setting. |

A complete piping package is
available from ACI to include sch 40 welded steel piping and fittings or sch
40 PVC. The fill line generally 4” with a 2 ½” hose connection. The suction
line to be 6” or 8” with a 4” or 6” dry hydrant connection above, and a 4’
square orifice plate at the floor. The gooseneck vent to be the same size as
the suction line. Manhole risers with frames and covers or hatches are
provided for tank access. Concrete bases with concrete filled pipe available
for bollards. The complete package is installed by the ACI crew.
Underground water storage
tanks remain ice free, rarely propagate algae or bacteria, and are far less
likely to be the target of vandalism or graffiti. Underground water supplies
have minimal “visual impact” and therefore maintain property values of
nearby commercial or residential lots. |

The NFPA (National Fire Protection
Association) has published guidelines regarding the location and volume for
fire cisterns based on the property or structure it is designed to protect.
Please consult with your local Fire Chief about any such project before you
start planning for an underground water storage tank. |
